GET CONNECTED!
Welcome to GreenTree Peer Center.  We are a peer-operated wellness center that empowers people to live more fully through peer support, self-help education, and great social connections!

FIND COMMUNITY!
GreenTree is supported by a great group of local Winston-Salem citizens who like being part of what we do and who broaden our community fellowship by sharing experiences and linking us to things happening in Winston-Salem.

GET SUPPORT!
Sometimes we just need a little "come alongside."  We just need companionship and empowering encouragement by someone who has been down a similar road to our own.  Our Peer Facilitators and other peer partners are happy to support your progress, your hopes.  Come learn more!

WITH GREAT APPRECIATION, WE ACKNOWLEDGE GIFTS SHARED !

GreenTree   Peer Support Program including its Peer Center and its Crisis Support effort at our "Refuge" appreciate the  many individual contributors in recent months as we have expanded our support capacity!

We also wish to thank Forsyth County Government for its   continued financial support as well as the Winston-Salem Foundation and Cardinal Innovations Health Care, both of whom  have extended financial support especially targeting our peer crisis support effort!  Further, we thank the North Carolina Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilites, and Substance Abuse Services for   supporting us to be opened full days.  For our first nine years, we have only been open half days, but in December 2021 that all changed with our Peer Run Wellness Center grant!

These contributions signal that our local community understands the role that peer to peer support can have in helping individuals reclaim their lives and develop their resiliency--but it also signals an appreciation for the innovative community solutions  that can be generated by individuals who have walked painful paths and have learned some very practical solutions through their journeys!

Thank you for your confidence in us, friends!

Support During Distress or Crisis

Life on Planet Earth means that we experience good times as well as some very stressful times.   When people are in distress, there can be many, many causes and they may not always mean that they need to  go to the hospital because we are having a crisis.  In fact, some of our community clinical leaders have stated that more than half of the folks who go to the Emergency Department during a time of mental distress are not actually needing   to be hospitalized.  The need support.

GreenTree wants to help our community re-think what a mental health crisis actually is.     A crisis is often the door to  positive changes.   A crisis can awaken new understanding about ourselves or about important life circumstances .  We can learn more about what next steps are really important in our lives.    We become more resilient as humans as we move through crises.       In fact, poet Robert Frost has said, "The best way out is always through."       We can move through a crisis in ways that empower us yet we may need support from others who have already experienced similar distress.

Let Us Be With You.
GreenTree  hopes to see people reach out for support before distress has peaked out to its scariest point.  We want to support people  by offering the safety of our GreenTree Peer Center or through individualized peer to peer support.    We have trained and caring supporters   who can help.

The   Refuge
Then, for those who have gone to our medical emergency settings but who are seen not to need hospitalization, GreenTree can  host them   in a safe , calming  home setting  , offering support for up to 24 hours and as the guest exits the Refuge space.  Currently, we are offering this to individuals exiting the Emergency Department at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center and may soon expand this to support individuals from other hospitals.

Do you need crisis support?    Call GreenTree at 336-429-4086 and let's talk!

GreenTree  operates from a framework of self-determination.    If humans do not exercise intention about their self-care and other care they receive, they will rarely benefit in the long term.   So compelling or forcing treatment is not the best strategy for the systems that are to be helping us!  This graphic, below, helps to express why a peer support social setting helps folks to make the choices that help them reclaim their best health!
